Apple’s March 21st Event . . . To Loop Us In

All eyes will be on Apple this Monday for their March special event. Apple has been in the news recently over their battle with the FBI and DOJ on giving law enforcement a means of unlocking and gaining access to an iPhone purportedly belonging to the San Bernardino shooter. The court battle and end result will certainly have repercussions on both sides and could potentially set a precedent on similar cases in the future with substantial impacts to law enforcement, the technology sector and consumers. There’s certainly more to come on this as we all watch how this case unfolds.

Now back to the March 21st event . . . There have been plenty of rumors going around about what this event COULD be about but we won’t know exactly what will ACTUALLY come out of the event until CEO Tim Cook takes the stage on Monday. However, a couple of products that seem to be likely include a new 4-inch iPhone (possibly called the “iPhone 5SE”) and a new 9.7-inch iPad (possibly called the “9.7-inch iPad Pro” given the rumored specs as compared to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro). Regardless of the naming conventions, these two products seem fairly likely to be announced at the March 21st event.

For quite some time, folks who enjoyed the 4-inch iPhone series have longed for its return; perhaps not as a replacement for the current flagship iPhone line, with the larger 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screens, but as an option for those who prefer the smaller form factor. If rumors hold true, those folks will finally get their wish . . . a 4-inch iPhone with potentially the comparable power of the current flagship iPhone line.

The other product that may interest folks will be a new 9.7-inch iPad. Apple did not announce a new 9.7-inch iPad Air 3 last Fall when the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro came out so the 9.7-inch iPad is certainly due for a refresher. For those of us still holding onto our iPad 2 series, we are certainly ready for a major upgrade. Many folks have put off upgrades of the 9.7-inch iPad line, bypassing the iPad 3 & 4 as well as the iPad Air & iPad Air 2 series, in hopes of waiting for the next big thing. The 12.9” iPad Pro was certainly BIG but not everyone needs or prefers the larger real estate. That said, it’s certainly time for a new 9.7-inch iPad that brings a bit more to the table.

Now let’s be clear, the iPad 2 series has served us well over the years but frankly, with all the iOS updates over the past few years, the iPad 2 has become extremely sluggish with performance taking a huge hit. While we can certainly find things to use our iPad 2 for, it would be quite nice (and probably best) to upgrade to a new 9.7-inch model. If all the latest rumors are true, we might not be getting an iPad Air 3 but rather a new 9.7-inch iPad Pro (with most of the bells and whistles from the larger 12.9-inch iPad Pro). If that’s the case, we are all for it. Let see what Tim Cook and the team at Apple have in store for us!
